Iowa farmers who planted cover crops in the fall have a limited time to apply for the state’s Crop Insurance Discount Program, which offers a $5 per acre discount on spring crop insurance premiums. The sign-up deadline is January 26, 2025, and farmers can apply by visiting Clean Water Iowa or speaking with their crop insurance agents.
This program, now in its eighth year, has helped nearly 2,000 Iowa farmers enroll over 1.2 million acres of cover crops. It serves as a model for similar initiatives in other states like Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana. Cover crops play a crucial role in improving soil health, reducing erosion, enhancing water quality, and providing livestock forage. However, to qualify, acres enrolled in other federal or state conservation programs may not be eligible.
For farmers interested in taking advantage of this cost-saving opportunity, be sure to check your eligibility and apply before the deadline.
